What Is Udyam Registration?
Udyam Registration is the official MSME registration under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. It replaced the old Udyog Aadhaar system and is now fully Aadhaar-based, linked to your PAN and GST, with investment and turnover figures pulled automatically from income tax and GST records rather than self-declared. It is free, it is issued the same day, and it never expires.
It is also the single most under-used document in Indian small business. Almost every MSME benefit is gated behind it: collateral-free credit under CGTMSE, the Public Procurement Policy that reserves a share of government buying for micro and small enterprises, priority sector lending classification, capital subsidies, ZED and NSIC registration, and MSME Samadhaan — the mechanism that lets you recover payments from buyers who hold your money beyond 45 days, with compound interest.
Classification changed with effect from 1 April 2025, with the investment and turnover ceilings raised substantially. A micro enterprise is now one with investment up to ₹2.5 crore and turnover up to ₹10 crore; small up to ₹25 crore and ₹100 crore; medium up to ₹125 crore and ₹500 crore. Many businesses that had graduated out of the micro or small category under the old limits fall back into it under the new ones — which restores access to benefits they assumed they had lost.
MSME Classification
Your category is decided by whichever criterion — investment or turnover — places you higher. Limits below reflect the revised thresholds effective 1 April 2025.

Benefits
What you actually gain from Udyam Registration.
Collateral-free credit
Udyam is a precondition for CGTMSE-backed lending, which lets banks sanction credit up to ₹5 crore without third-party collateral.
Payment within 45 days, enforceable
Under the MSMED Act, buyers must pay a registered MSE within 45 days. MSME Samadhaan lets you file against defaulters and claim compound interest at three times the RBI bank rate.
A reserved share of government buying
Central ministries, departments and PSUs must procure a defined share of their annual purchases from micro and small enterprises, with sub-reservations for SC/ST and women-owned units.
The key to subsidies and other registrations
Capital subsidies, ZED certification, NSIC registration and most state industrial policy benefits all require a valid Udyam number.
Eligibility
Check where you stand before applying — we confirm all of this on the first call anyway.

- Pure trading activities are excluded from most benefits, though retail and wholesale trade were subsequently allowed to register for priority sector lending purposes.
