What Is ZED Certification?
MSME Sustainable Certification, known as ZED — Zero Defect Zero Effect — is the Ministry of MSME's scheme to raise manufacturing quality while reducing environmental impact. Zero defect refers to producing without quality failures; zero effect refers to producing without harming the environment. It is delivered through the Quality Council of India and is structured in three ascending levels.
What makes ZED unusually attractive is the economics. The government subsidises a large share of the certification cost, weighted towards the smallest enterprises — micro units receive the highest subsidy percentage, with additional support for women-owned, SC/ST-owned and North-Eastern units. There is a joining reward for registering, and handholding support is provided free of charge to help units close the gaps identified during assessment.
Beyond the certificate, ZED certification is recognised in procurement and by lenders, and certified units can access further incentives for testing, quality improvement and technology adoption. For a small manufacturer, it is one of the least expensive credible quality credentials available, precisely because most of the cost is borne by the scheme rather than by you.

Levels are ascending — most units start at Bronze and progress. Each level assesses a wider set of parameters than the one below it.
Bronze

Who can apply
- Any MSME with a valid Udyam Registration Certificate.
- Primarily aimed at manufacturing enterprises, where the zero-defect and zero-effect parameters are most directly applicable.
- Micro, small and medium enterprises are all eligible, with the subsidy percentage decreasing as size increases.
- The unit must be operational, with production actually running at the premises to be assessed.
Additional support categories
- Women-owned enterprises receive additional subsidy support on the certification cost.
- SC/ST-owned enterprises receive additional subsidy support.
- Units located in the North Eastern Region, Himalayan states and aspirational districts receive enhanced support.
- Units that are part of an SFURTI cluster or in specified sectors may receive additional benefits under the scheme.
